MacConkey Agar is a selective and differential microbiological culture medium used for the isolation and differentiation of Gram-negative enteric bacteria, particularly members of the Enterobacteriaceae family.
The medium contains bile salts and crystal violet which inhibit the growth of most Gram-positive organisms, while lactose and neutral red indicator allow differentiation between lactose-fermenting and non-lactose-fermenting bacteria.
Lactose fermenters such as Escherichia coli produce pink to red colonies, whereas non-fermenters such as Salmonella and Shigella produce colorless colonies.
MacConkey Agar is widely used in clinical microbiology, food microbiology, environmental monitoring, and water quality testing laboratories.
Key Features
- Selective medium for Gram-negative bacteria
• Differentiates lactose fermenters and non-lactose fermenters
• Inhibits most Gram-positive microorganisms
• Widely used in clinical, food, and environmental microbiology
• Supports growth of Enterobacteriaceae species
• Reliable colony differentiation with clear color reaction

Preparation Instructions
- Suspend approximately 50 g of MacConkey Agar powder in 1 liter of purified or distilled water.
- Heat with constant agitation until the medium dissolves completely.
- Sterilize by autoclaving at 121°C for 15 minutes.
- Cool to 45–50°C and mix well.
- Pour into sterile petri dishes and allow to solidify before use.
Applications
- Isolation of Gram-negative enteric bacteria
• Differentiation of lactose fermenting bacteria
• Clinical microbiology laboratories
• Food safety and quality testing
• Water and environmental microbiology
• Detection of Enterobacteriaceae contamination
Storage Conditions
Store the dehydrated medium in a tightly closed container at 10–30°C in a dry environment, protected from moisture and direct sunlight.
Prepared plates should be stored at 2–8°C and used within recommended laboratory timeframes.
Quality Documentation
To support laboratory procurement, regulatory compliance, and quality assurance, the following documentation is available upon request:
- Certificate of Analysis (COA)
• Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
• Technical Data Sheet (TDS)
These documents provide batch specifications, safety information, technical parameters, and product performance data required by laboratories, universities, and industrial research facilities.
Available Packaging
- 250 g Laboratory Pack
Other pack sizes may be available depending on supplier production batches.
