Product Overview
Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) is a widely used microbiological culture medium for the cultivation and enumeration of yeasts and molds. It is commonly used in food microbiology, pharmaceutical quality control, environmental monitoring, and agricultural microbiology laboratories.
The medium contains potato infusion and dextrose, which provide a rich nutrient base that promotes robust fungal growth, while agar acts as the solidifying agent. Potato Dextrose Agar is often used for fungal isolation, maintenance of fungal cultures, and microbial contamination testing.
PDA can also be supplemented with antibiotics or acidified to inhibit bacterial growth when selective isolation of fungi is required.
Key Features
- Standard medium for yeast and mold cultivation
• Supports growth of fungi, molds, and yeasts
• Widely used in food, environmental, and pharmaceutical microbiology
• Suitable for fungal isolation and enumeration
• Provides rich nutrients for rapid fungal growth
• Reliable medium for quality control laboratories
Typical Composition (per Liter)
| Component | Amount |
| Potato Infusion | 200 g |
| Dextrose (Glucose) | 20 g |
| Agar | 15 g |
| Final pH (25°C) | 5.6 ± 0.2 |
Preparation Instructions
- Suspend 39 g of Potato Dextrose Agar powderin 1 liter of distilled or purified water.
- Heat with frequent stirring until the medium dissolves completely.
- Sterilize by autoclaving at 121°C for 15 minutes.
- Cool to 45–50°Cbefore pouring into sterile petri dishes.
- Allow the medium to solidify before inoculation.
For selective fungal isolation, the medium may be acidified or supplemented with antibiotics after sterilization.
Applications
